Castle Tucker and Nickels-Sortwell House are two magnificent, fascinating historic houses, both built in 1807, but telling very different stories. Castle Tucker tells the story of the Tuckers, a prominent local shipping family who bought the house in 1858 and redecorated it in the Victorian style. Their lives of affluence gradually gave way to genteel poverty as they survived the economic rollercoaster of the late 19th and early 20th century. The house is still filled with their possessions and furnishings, as they left them. The grand, high style Federal Nickels-Sortwell House was built by a wealthy shipping magnate but then survived 80+ years as a hotel before being rescued by Cambridge industrialist, Alvin Sortwell in 1899. Gertrude and Frances Sortwell restored and decorated their much-loved summer home in the Colonial Revival style, with a mix of fine antiques and reproductions. Houses are open June 1 - October 15.
